MAS, Air Asia in QPR jersey deal

LONDON: Malaysia Airlines and AirAsia both announced their respective sponsorships of English Premier League club Queens Park Rangers’ home and away jerseys respectively yesterday.
The announcement, made at Loftus Road, will see MAS sponsoring the team’s kit for the home matches while the AirAsia logo will be emblazoned on the team’s jerseys for the away matches.

The deal is considered the first of its kind in football where two airlines from the same country have teamed up to sponsor a football team.
This sponsorship between the two rival airlines was made possible following the recent Collaborative Co-operation Framework (CCF) concluded by both parties.

Malaysia Airlines executive director Mohd Rashdan Yusof said: “Our sponsorship of the home jersey of QPR, together with AirAsia’s sponsorship of the away jersey, is a ρrst for the Premier League. It also celebrates MAS’ recent collaboration framework with AirAsia.”
QPR CEO Philip Beard commented: “This is a unique and exciting venture for the club. Attracting two major Asian companies to come on board shows the global appeal QPR have as a brand.
“We are extremely positive about building a thriving relationship with both businesses in a bid to broaden our exposure in Southeast Asia and further afield.
“This is a remarkable deal for QPR and brings further positive news following a highly successful few weeks since the takeover.”
The new home game jersey, adorned with the Malaysia Airlines logo, was worn for the first time in the showdown against Newcastle United early this morning.
AirAsia regional head of commercial Kathleen Tan said that the airline is thrilled with the partnership with QPR, who are also owned by the airline’s boss Tan Sri Tony Fernandes.
“This is a timely and significant relationship between two brands, which are keen in taking on any challenges for the taste of success,” she said.
“Our logo on QPR’s away and third shirt does not only symbolise our energetic partnership, but also a joint representation of the hard work and challenges that we (AirAsia) went through.
“This is a very meaningful moment for all of us, and we are very excited to jointly associate ourselves with a team like QPR, as they have a remarkable history in English football and their unrelenting spirit reflects our own Asian endeavour for success.
“Collaboratively, AirAsia and Malaysia Airlines can certainly build a very strong following for the QPR brand in a very passionate football audience in Asia.”
The tow Malaysian airlines will sponsor the QPR team jerseys for two seasons.
